Since its foundation in 1999, the fair has offered the public a wide range of contemporary artworks in various formats and price brackets. Participation from international galleries and artists provides a valuable opportunity to discover new artistic voices through the diversity of the exhibited works. Artist talks offer valuable insights into the artworks and creative processes.
ART INTERNATIONAL ZURICH 2026 (8–10 May, Giessereihalle Puls 5) reaffirmed its status as a leading platform for Swiss contemporary art, setting a clear tone in terms of content and atmosphere. Bringing together 54 participants with art from around 25 countries, the fair combined a strong regional presence — around two-thirds of the participants were from Switzerland — with contributions from Europe, North America, and Asia, as well as countries including Canada, the USA, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. This mix created a dynamic tension between locally rooted positions and global voices.
In terms of content, the event offered a broad spectrum of media formats. Paintings and traditional sculptures were presented alongside photography, object art, digital works, and large-scale, site-specific installations. The diversity of the works on display reflected current discourses in contemporary art, such as questions of cultural roots and identity, the effects of globalisation and digitalisation, and socially relevant issues. Visitors were able to compare different aesthetic strategies and narrative approaches directly.
Choosing the historic Puls 5 foundry hall as the venue was key to creating the desired impact. Its industrial architecture and spacious halls provided flexible exhibition spaces in which both established galleries and emerging artists were effectively showcased. The curatorial approach focused on thematic breadth and balance, with presentations ranging from intimate, narrative works to large-scale, conceptual projects that took advantage of the hall's unique features.
A central focus of the fair was personal art education. The atmosphere was shaped by the direct exchange between artists, gallery owners, collectors, curators, and members of the public. During solo exhibitions and discussion sessions, artists were able to discuss their artistic style and the inspiration behind their creations. This enhanced the authenticity of the presentations and provided deeper insights. These encounters strengthened networks and fostered dialogue on the interpretation of artworks, collecting practices, and current issues in art theory.
The combination of regional roots and international connections has given the fair a distinct identity. ART INTERNATIONAL ZURICH serves as both a showcase for local talent and a gateway to global trends. For visitors, this resulted in a multifaceted experience, with discovery, professional exchange, and aesthetic inspiration given equal weight. The event attracted a large number of interested visitors and provided platforms for both emerging and established artists. It left the impression that the fair will continue to be a driving force for the Swiss art scene in the future.
