ART INTERNATIONAL ZURICH 2010

Derrick Feole

Erich Fromm once said, "Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world. Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before and let your soul take you to w here you long to be...”

ARTIST STATEMENT

"For me it's all about the journey; how I get there, and how I experience this adventure of being fully alive. A new world opens up to me each time I move behind the lens. There is something about the forces of nature at play around me that heighten my senses and pulls me into focus. Reality dissolves and my aperture merges into a natural moving kaleidoscope of visual textures.

Nature is so regenerative, so giving of itself that to feel this expansiveness mysteriously transmit and unfold a visual feeling into my camera letting me know I am home. I want to take you with me on my visual journey, down unpaved paths and into gardens where the natural order of things is beyond what you know or whom you think you are, into a world where nature breathes in freedom and exhales expression.

Abstract or real, it's not the subject but the ability to catch the simplistic magic while holding the details of the message. I feel my purpose is to capture photographic art that delivers a humble, yet powerful and sometimes complex meaning for the observer. Art establishing and transforming a viewer's participation, creating an ultimate alignment within a brief moment.

My most recent work seems to carry me back into childhood studying black and white photography with my grandfather (now he is 96 years old). It was then that the values and ideals I hold today were first formed. One of these beliefs is that an image either digital or film should stay pristine, as it was envisioned, and not be manipulated beyond the scope of the intended focus.”

PHOTOGRAPHY BIO

Derrick Feole first started taking photographs at a young age. It was then that he first learned the technique, philosophy, and other necessary skills required to capture the moment, as it is, and as he sees it. Both Photography (and Music) are the result of his grandfather Angelo's tutoring. Angelo, who is 96 years old, was both a professional Photographer and Musician. He shared with Derrick his knowledge and the important tools of the basics of light to express the magical emotion of images.

One major belief that he still holds on to today is that an image either digital or film should stay pristine, as it was envisioned, and not be manipulated beyond the scope of the intended focus. In this modern day of digital imaging he still abides by this uncompromising rule for all his Landscape Art Photography… What you see is what he was photographing on that day; nothing added and no digital manipulation beyond basic contrast and/or Black and White conversions.

Derrick's goal is to deliver Photographic art that brings the viewer into the scene to be part of something that we can understand only in human terms. "We are the sum of the parts that collectively make up this reality, our actions and thoughts directly effect everything around us. How we see the world is a reflection of ourselves and others close to us.”

The views are big, larger than life, giving you a feeling that you have been there before, or must go there yourself!! Most importantly, they are images that everyone can relate to. Previously in 2005 through 2007 his work was on display at the First and Business Class Lounges of Swiss International Airlines in Zurich and New York JFK. In addition, his work was also published on the in-flight menu cards for both First and Business Class Trans-Atlantic flights.

Mr. Feole is originally from Lawrence, MA (USA) which is just north of Boston near the New Hampshire border. Today, Mr. Feole resides in Luzern, Switzerland, just south of Zürich. It is in Switzerland and the Southwest USA that he finds an abundance of magical emotions within the depths of the eternal natural beauty on year-round display. In addition to the work you see here Derrick as a library of over 200 signature images in Color and Black & White, including over 30 limited edition images from many locations in Switzerland and USA.

MUSIC BIO

Derrick Feole, originally from Boston has been involved in music for most of his adult life. First playing the piano and then studying the saxophone since 1987. His concentration of studies in the beginning was classical and composition and then evolved to Jazz, Blues and Funk.

At a young age Derrick first started to learn from his Grandfather, Angelo. Angelo taught him the basics of music theory and reading and then moved on to more complex studies in his early teens. In addition to learning from his grandfather he also studied with Joe Viola (former sax player with the original Glen Miller Orchestra 1929-1931). While studying with Mr. Viola, Derrick was able to convince him to sell him his 1931 Selmer Tenor Saxophone that Derrick still uses now. During these years Derrick also studied with Henley Douglas Jr. of the Heavy Metal Horns and Boston Horns (USA), and also studied weekly at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. These studies strengthened his musical abilities and also introduced him to Classical Jazz, Blues, and Funk.
